History of Touch Football

Touch football was used as a training technique for Rugby Leauge teams during the 1950’s and 60s and as an ad-libbed event by people running around in parks. It soon became structured and the first touch football competition was held in South Sydney in 1968.

From 1968 it quickly flowed through to other suburbs and states and eventually became an international sport with Australia vs New Zealand in 1976.

Today the game has further expanded overseas with international events such as the World Cup attracting teams from New Zealand, South Africa, England, Wales, Scotland, USA, Japan, Singapore, Samoa, Fiji, Cook Islands, Lebanon, Italy and New Guinea amongst others.
